What to do and see in Lucca

The city of Lucca is necessary to visit it starting from the center and then go beyond the walls, dating from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, to admire the beauty that distinguish this province. The old town still retains its medieval appearance with alleys and squares overlooked by towers and palaces. In particular, it is advisable to take one of the most characteristic streets, as Via Fillungo, the main axis of the medieval village, surrounded by noble palaces and ancient towers including the famous Clock Tower. As for the religious buildings there are the Cathedral of St. Martin with the interior rich in precious works; the Cathedral Museum which houses paintings, liturgical objects and sculptures; the church of San Michele in Foro, unique example of architecture of Pisa and Lucca and the beautiful Basilica of San Frediano. Instead, among the civil architecture you can find Villa of Paolo Guinigi, home of the National Museum rich in Etruscan and Roman archaeological finds and collections of paintings; Palazzo Mansi with its precious furnishings, which houses a National Museum of Lucca and the seventeenth century Palazzo Moriconi-Pfanner, expression of Baroque. It is also reported the visit to the birthplace of the musician Giacomo Puccini, now become museum to preserve the works and memories of the artist. In the rest of the province there are many tourist itineraries to discover the beautiful villas, made from the late sixteenth to mid-nineteenth century as a country residence of wealthy gentlemen. Examples are: Villa Torrigiani by impressive gardens, Villa Mansi, with its frescoed rooms and the garden designed by the architect Juvarra. Very interesting are the visit to the medieval castles scattered in the Plain of Lucca, including the Nozzano Castle, the fortress of Monaco, the Castle of Altopascio and the fortress of Villa Basilica. The tourist centers known for the seaside life are Viareggio, famous for its Carnival, for its beaches and its nightlife, Forte dei Marmi, Pietrasanta and Camaiore.
