Tuscan Emilian Appennine National Park

Parco Nazionale appennino Tosco Emiliano

The Tuscan Emilian Appennino National Park extends between Tuscany and Emilia Romagna, it includes the Apennine ridge portions of the provinces of Lucca, Massa Carrara, Parma and Reggio Emilia between the valleys of the Dolo, of the Auction, of the Secchia, of the Enza, Cedra, Bratica and Parma on the Emilia side and Tuscany between the valleys of Taverone and Rosaro. The park comes from the fusion of different protected areas: on the Emilia side the Alto Appenino Reggiano, the Alta Val Parma and Cedra, the Pietra di Bismantova and the Triassic “gessi” of the Secchia Valley. On the Tuscan side, near the Monte Vecchio, from the Appennine ridge, a buttress towards the Garfagnana reaches the calcareous massif of the Pania di Corfino and the Orecchiella Natural Park. The territory is very old: the geological formations date from the Upper Triassic (210-200 million years ago) and the Middle Miocene (17 million years ago), with evident traces on the mountains and the valleys, that influence the Flora. The Park boasts an extraordinary wealth of natural environments, from the grasslands to the blueberry moors to the most impervious peaks; and even lakes, waterfalls, ponds, rocky walls that stand out on the streams. Important fauna, which sees wolves, deer, roe deer and golden eagle, and very important flora, with many botanical rarities that form whole areas, real natural botanical gardens.
