CNA – Waldensian Origins: From Pinerolo to the World
Description
Piedmont is a place of significance for the Waldensians, a Protestant minority that found refuge in the valleys around Pinerolo when, in the early 13th century, they began to face persecution by the authorities, who disapproved of the emergence of a new religion.
The Waldensians were persecuted for centuries, until February 17, 1848, when Carlo Alberto granted them the Letters Patent, the edict of emancipation that granted them the same civil and political rights as Catholic citizens.
This itinerary takes you through the main sites associated with the history of the Waldensians, without overlooking the town of Pinerolo, with its history tied to the great migrations of the 19th century and its local traditions—which are still very much alive—ranging from regional cuisine to traditional dances.
Stage: Torre Pellice
Torre Pellice and the Waldensian Sites.
A day dedicated to Waldensian sites: The Waldensian Museum in Torre Pellice, founded in 1889, currently comprises two sections: a historical section, which traces eight centuries of Waldensian history (12th–20th centuries), and an ethnographic section, which documents daily life in the Waldensian valleys between the 19th and 20th centuries. Afterward, we’ll visit Angrogna, with its rich cultural heritage—the result of a long history that has left behind collections, museums, schools, and monuments throughout the area.
Dinner at a pizzeria in Villar Pellice, another place where migration, departures, and returns intersect. The pizza, a symbol of Italian cuisine, is made with ingredients from the upper valley, which make it simply unique.

Pinerolo and the sites associated with emigration from Pinerolo. The Museum of Emigration in Frossasco is highly recommended; it offers in-depth insights into the history of Waldensian emigration and a workshop where visitors can explore the stories of Piedmontese people who emigrated around the world.

• Museo del Mutuo Soccorso, founded in Pinerolo in 1848 by a shoemaker, a gilder, four carpenters, two tailors, a master builder, a decorator, and a mechanic.
• National Historical Museum of the Cavalry in Pinerolo, considered one of the most extensive military museums in Europe. It traces about a century of history in Pinerolo, Piedmont, and Italy, with world-renowned equestrian master Federigo Caprilli as its exceptional companion.
A stop for “Merenda” with the famous Zurich Cake at Pasticceria Castino.
Transfer to the Dellerba agritourism farm—an educational farm—on the hills of Pinerolo for a tour of the property and the winery, followed by a delicious dinner featuring local products and wines from their own vineyard!
