Val Sangone: A Slow Forest

Guided tour of the historic villages of the Sangone Valley: a loop hike in Coazze, in the province of Turin, Piedmont

A fascinating loop trail, shaped like the number eight, will take you on a journey to discover the historic villages of the Sangone Valley. Walking on the left bank of the stream, we’ll explore the side valleys of Balma and Ricciavre. The route passes through picturesque mountain villages such as Ferria, Forno, Molè, Flizzo, and Ruata, climbing up to the Ciargiur del Forno pastures and the Roc du Jermu viewpoint, which offers a sweeping view of the valley.

The descent winds through the villages of Ciargiur, Ruata, and Oliva, before returning to Ferria. Along the trails, we’ll delve into local history through place names and the traces left by humans and nature: we’ll pass through dense beech forests, old charcoal kilns, the historic Garida Mine, the ancient lime kiln, and trails linked to the memory of the partisans.

The entire experience takes place over the course of a day, starting and ending at the Casa Alpina Evelina Ostorero. At the end of the hike, the facility will host the group for a traditional “merenda sinoira” to wrap up the day together.
