In 1922, King Victor Emmanuel III signed the decree-law establishing the Gran Paradiso National Park. Straddling the border between Piedmont and the Aosta Valley, this area boasts a unique distinction: it is home to the only mountain range with peaks over 4,000 meters high that lies entirely within Italian territory.
Today, the park is the ideal destination for those seeking high-altitude hikes, breathtaking views, and an authentic connection with alpine nature.
The Five Valleys and the Great Lakes Region
The heart of the park is crisscrossed by five main valleys, each with its own identity and natural wonders: the Val di Rhêmes, the Val di Cogne, the Valsavarenche, the Valle dell’Orco, and the Val Soana. Geographically, the territory is divided between the Orco River watershed to the south and the Dora Baltea River watershed to the north.
As you explore the protected area, you’ll come across two spectacular attractions:
- Colle del Nivolet and the Great Lakes: The park’s largest and most picturesque bodies of water are located around the famous Colle del Nivolet, where the Savara Stream has its source. This stunning “region of the great lakes” offers an incredible panoramic view of the peaks of Gran Paradiso and Levanne.
- The Scenic Waterfalls: Water is the true star of the landscape. On the Aosta Valley side, the famous Lillaz Waterfalls (in Cogne) stand out, while the Piedmont side offers spectacular, roaring waterfalls along the trails.
Wildlife: Encountering the Ibex and Alpine Life
The Gran Paradiso National Park is famous worldwide for saving its wildlife from extinction. As you walk quietly along the trails, wildlife watching is a daily thrill.
- The Ibex: It is the park’s iconic animal. Adult males are majestic: they can weigh over 100 kg and boast spectacular horns up to one meter long.
- Other inhabitants of the valleys: In the meadows and among the high-altitude rocks, it’s very easy to spot elegant chamois, agile foxes, and cute marmots—and, if you look up at the sky, the majestic golden eagle.
Sleeping at High Altitudes: Mountain Huts and Bivouacs in the Park
To fully enjoy the mountain experience, the park offers an excellent network of facilities for hikers and mountaineers:
- Alpine huts: Managed facilities that offer room and board, ideal for sampling traditional Alpine dishes after a day of hiking.
- Permanent shelters: Unstaffed facilities that are always open, designed to serve as a base for mountaineers undertaking the longest and most demanding climbs.
