Tuscan Archipelago National Park

Tuscan Archipelago National Park

Guide to the Tuscan Archipelago National Park: Europe’s Largest Marine Park.

The Tuscan Archipelago National Park is an unparalleled natural wonder: it is the largest marine park in Europe. This extraordinary protected area encompasses the seven main islands of Tuscany (Elba, Giglio, Capraia, Montecristo, Pianosa, Giannutri, and Gorgona), each characterized by a unique identity, breathtaking views, and an ancient geological history.

Formed when they broke away from the mainland in ancient times, the islands have completely different geological characteristics:

  • Capraia: the only island of entirely volcanic origin.
  • Gorgona and Montecristo: rugged and granite-clad.
  • Giannutri and Pianosa: flat and entirely limestone.
  • Elba and Giglio: a fascinating mix of granite and limestone.

Nature’s Sanctuaries: The Wild Charm of Montecristo

Many of these islands have remained true, unspoiled sanctuaries, sheltered from tourism-driven development. The most famous example isMontecristo Island: once an exclusive refuge for monks and hermits, it is now considered the most protected island in the Mediterranean, accessible only to a limited number of visitors and for guided study tours.

Flora: Biodiversity in Forests and the Mediterranean Scrub

Thanks to the variety of terrain and microclimates, the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago are home to unique plant species:

  • Elba Island: Ferns and the rare Elba cornflower thrive on the majestic Monte Capanne.
  • Isola del Giglio and Gorgona: The forests of Giglio are home to majestic trees such as the Turkey oak, the downy oak, and the common oak, while Gorgona is home to the manna ash and the bulbous chestnut.
  • Capraia: Here, the flora is a triumph of Mediterranean scrub and garrigue, where the scent of the Sardinian sea lily, the island saffron, and the distinctive branched statice fills the air.

Fauna: The Land of Minor Endemism and the Kings of the Sky

The park boasts an exceptional record for the number of endemic species—that is, animal species found exclusively in this area—such as certain gastropod mollusks, the Elba satyrid butterfly, and several unique lizards.

For birdwatchers, the archipelago is a prime spot for birdwatching:

  • The peregrine falcon regularly nests on the cliffs of Elba and Capraia.
  • The rare wallcreeper has made Giglio Island its home.
  • The skies are filled with great and little shearwaters, swallows, and swifts.

🌊 The Park’s Symbol: Among the many species of birds, the true star of the protected area is the extremely rare Corsican gull, a globally threatened species that has found its ideal habitat here and has been chosen as the park’s official symbol.
