The region of Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and is one of the largest regions of Italy. Its length from north to south is about 270 km and has a width of about 145 km. The territory is mostly mountainous and irregular although the heights of the various peaks are not high; maximum heights are touched in the Gennargentu area with the Punta La Marmora of 1,834 meters high. The flat areas are normally found along some coastal areas or in the area of the Campidano. The length of the coasts of Sardinia is almost 1900 km and its sea has colors ranging from deep blue to emerald green. The sandy beaches alternate with rocky coast and strewn with rocks; in many areas, especially in the more inaccessible it is possible to reach by sea some small coves immersed in a wild and unspoiled nature. The coastal areas have a vocation very touristy and especially in summer become the favorite place for tourists to relax on the sandy beaches washed by the sea, which is perhaps the best in theMediterranean Sea. The best known internationally is certainly the Costa Smeralda (for the colors of the sea) with the town ofPorto Rotondo, Porto Cervo and Palau who has in front of him the magnificent island of La Maddalenawhich along with other islands of the archipelago is home of the National Park of La Maddalena. Other seaside resorts of remarkable beauty and importance are: San Teodoro, Santa Teresa di Gallura, Stintino that its coasts faces on the Asinara Island which houses the homonymous National Park, Sant’Antioco, Villasimius, Cala Gonone and Porto St. Paolo that has in front of him the Tavolara Island. In addition to a comprehensive selection of tourist resorts, the island also offers numerous archaeological sites where you can admire the memories of ancient civilizations nuragica that, above all, in the site of Su Nuraxi in Barumini, a world heritage site by UNESCO, brings together some well-preserved examples of Nuragi, which are the old houses dating back to about 2,500 years ago, with circular form and built of stone. The island has also been part of Ancient Greece and was subsequently land conquered by the Romans, therefore, on the coastal areas there are still relics from these two ancient civilizations.
