Do you prefer the seaside in autumn and don’t want to go abroad?
For most of autumn, southern Italy offers mild days, ideal for slow, relaxing holidays. Let’s take a look at some destinations!

Monopoli and Polignano, Apulian postcards

Between sheltered coves and white cliffs, the combination of Monopoli and Polignano a Mare in autumn offers a special light to those seeking perfectly coloured landscapes, mild temperatures and the chance to enjoy the sea without crowds, with boat trips when the weather permits. A few kilometres inland is the Itria Valley, with its white villages and trulli: autumn is the ideal season for cycling among centuries-old olive trees and vineyards, visiting the numerous oil mills and educational farms during the new oil campaign. At the farm, it will be easy to indulge in the culinary delights that Puglia offers in abundance: mozzarella, burrata, white and red wines.

Maratea, the Lucanian pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea

Maratea, the pearl of the Lucanian Tyrrhenian Sea is magnificent in the low season: paths scented with Mediterranean scrub descend to dark beaches and coves, with views stretching from the sea to the Lucanian Apennines. The Monte San Biagio Ring is a classic autumn trek of about 5 km between the historic centre and the summit, suitable for all levels of fitness. For the more experienced, the Mediterranean Trail follows the Lucanian coastline from Castrocucco beach, among myrtle and wild fennel.
For pure mountain lovers, a trip to the Pollino National Park or Monte Sirino is a must, where foliage and mushrooms delight the eyes and the palate. Thanks to its particular geographical position, Lucanian cuisine is both sea and land-based: local tuna, cheeses, cruschi tomatoes and Sirino truffles.

Tropea, destination of the Gods

Welcome to Tropea, the kingdom of the red onion, a Protected Geographical Indication, local pride and star ingredient of many dishes you will enjoy here. Tropea in autumn means uncrowded sunsets on the Costa degli Dei, swimming until late October and a more authentic village, with artisan shops, narrow streets and historic portals. The days invite you to take slow walks to the sanctuary on the rock and light treks between beaches and panoramic viewpoints, with boat trips still enjoyable. Among the trips worth mentioning is the one to the church of Santa Maria della Neve in Michelizia, along with those along the Tyrrhenian coast, ideal when the sun is not too strong. The more athletic can venture out on trekking routes in the Aspromonte, a place of steep climbs and breathtaking views, with abandoned villages such as Roghudi and Pentedattilo to discover.

The Sicily of enchanted villages

The south-eastern coast of Sicily, with its beaches and nature reserves, offers a warm sea in autumn, perfect for the last swims of the season. Architecture and photography enthusiasts will love the way the sunset light refracts on the Baroque architecture of Noto! For those who prefer more rustic surroundings, the soft lines of Noto give way to the fishing village of Marzamemi, with its courtyards used as outdoor seating areas for the numerous restaurants and historic tuna fisheries. Mid-season days are particularly suitable for walking in the Vendicari Nature Reserve, among marshes, coastal towers and dunes, observing flamingos and other migratory species. The seaside and relaxation are alternated with world-famous food and wine, characterised by seafood cuisine and the Val di Noto wineries for savoury whites and Mediterranean reds. Autumn is the season of late harvests and menus based on wild herbs.

Vendicari Nature Reserve

Autumn brings fewer visitors and allows for authentic experiences related to agriculture and craftsmanship that are often precluded during the high season because they are overwhelmed by foreign tourists. Holidays may be shorter, given the shorter days and cooler weather, but they are also more pleasant thanks to the mild climate. To get around, it is best to base yourself by the sea and make day trips to parks, farms and villages, combining off-season swimming, local food tasting and strategic walks and treks, tailored to your abilities.

The seasons change and a different light shines on the wonders of our country: don’t miss it, get going!
