This phenomenon found decisive support in the figure of Charles Borromeo, Archbishop of Milan, and in the principles established by the Council of Trent, which viewed sacred art as a powerful catechetical tool: as they walked through the chapels, pilgrims could in fact “read” episodes from the lives of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and the saints through statues and frescoes, in a sort of narrative told through images that was accessible even to those who could not read.
Nine Sacred Mountains, One Grand Project
The UNESCO site comprises nine distinct complexes, built between the 16th and 17th centuries with the contribution of the finest artists of the late Renaissance and Baroque traditions of Lombardy and Piedmont: Varallo, Crea, Orta, Varese, Oropa, Ossuccio, Ghiffa, Domodossola, and Valperga. Each of these complexes is situated along the slopes of a hill, forming a symbolic route of chapels and monumental stations that transform the natural landscape into a sacred space, perfectly integrated among forests, lakes, and hills.
Sacro Monte di Varallo, the largest and oldest
The Sacred Mount of Varallo, in Valsesia, is the original and most impressive of the entire network. It stands on a cliff overlooking the village of Varallo Sesia and comprises 45 chapels, in addition to the majestic basilica dedicated to the Assumption and other buildings of great artistic value. Its devotional route, among the most elaborate and scenic of the nine sites, served as a model for the creation of many of the other Sacred Mountains in Piedmont and Lombardy.
Crea, Orta, Oropa: Faith and Landscape in Monferrato and on the Lake
In the heart of Monferrato, on the hill of Serralunga di Crea, stands the Sacro Monte di Crea, with its 23 chapels scattered across one of the highest hills in the area, set in a breathtaking landscape of vineyards and rolling hills.
Overlooking Lake Orta, the Sacro Monte di Orta San Giulio is dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi and is nestled in a centuries-old forest, offering spectacular panoramic views of the lake and the island of San Giulio.
A pilgrimage destination since the Middle Ages, the Sacro Monte di Oropa, just outside Biella, is dedicated to the Black Madonna, enshrined in the famous sanctuary that still attracts the faithful and visitors from all over Italy today.

On the western shore of Lake Como, across from the picturesque Isola Comacina, lies the Sacro Monte della Beata Vergine del Soccorso in Ossuccio, a devotional trail in a panoramic setting that offers one of the most beautiful views of the entire lake.
In Varese, the Sacro Monte del Rosario has been a place of pilgrimage since the Middle Ages, with its chapels lining the path as visitors make their way up to the sanctuary at the summit. On Lake Maggiore, the Sacro Monte Santissima Trinità in Ghiffa adds another stop to the lakeside route of the Sacri Monti, while in Domodossola, in the Ossola Valley, Sacro Monte Calvario offers a pilgrimage route dedicated to the Passion of Christ, among the chapels that climb the hill behind the town.
Belmonte, the Sacred Mountain on Red Granite
The Sacro Monte di Belmonte, located in Valperga in the Canavese region, rounds out the circuit; it stands out for its spectacular setting on a hill of distinctive red granite. Less well-known than other sites on the circuit, it offers a more intimate and peaceful atmosphere, ideal for those seeking a visit away from the heaviest tourist crowds.
