The Valley of the Temples
Among the most beautiful monuments on display are the Temple of Concordia, the Temple of Juno with its 25 Doric columns, the Temple of Hercules, the Temple of the Dioscuri, and the Temple of Olympian Zeus.
The City of Agrigento
The city center features numerous monuments and buildings in a variety of architectural styles. Among the religious monuments, the Cathedral of San Gerlando, the Sanctuary of San Calogero, the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, and the Church of San Nicola stand out. Be sure to visit the Regional Archaeological Museum.
Porto Empedocle
Porto Empedocle, which borders Agrigento, is one of the main ports on Sicily’s southern coast.
Sciacca
Also located on the coast is the city of Sciacca, which is rich in monuments and churches and is also a spa town. It is renowned for its historic Carnival, which is considered the most important in Sicily.
Licata
Another seaside resort is Licata, which—in addition to its Baroque palaces and churches—features Castel Sant’Angelo, an ancient 16th-century Spanish watchtower, overlooking the sea. Also on the beach is the lighthouse, one of the tallest in Italy.
Bivona and the Hinterland
Inland, we find the town of Bivona, with its 14th-century castle, and the town of Favara, which is also dominated by a 14th-century castle.
