Biella is a city consisting of a lower part (Biella Piano) and an upper part (Biella Piazzo), connected by a distinctive funicular. The lower part is home to the 10th-century Baptistery and the Cathedral, while the upper part houses the city’s historic center, rich in medieval charm and stately palaces.
About twelve kilometers north of the city lies the Sacro Monte di Oropa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an imposing religious complex dedicated to the Marian cult of the Black Madonna. Of particular interest is the ancient medieval village of Ricetto di Candelo, which is beautifully preserved and features over two hundred buildings within its fortified walls.
Other notable tourist attractions are located in the mountains of the Cervo Valley:the Oasi Zegna, a nature reserve with educational purposes, and the Panoramica Zegna, a scenic tourist road offering spectacular views. For extreme sports enthusiasts, Veglio is home to the “Colossus,” a permanent bungee jumping facility that, at over 150 meters, is one of the largest in Europe. Lake Viverone is an excellent spot for water sports, while car enthusiasts can attend the “Rally della Lana” in late February or the “Rally della Lana Storico” in mid-June, both of which start in Biella.
Among the most distinctive events are the Biella Carnival, featuring the traditional “Trial of the Babi” (a traditional carnival mask) and the Passion of Sordevolo, a reenactment of the Passion of Jesus Christ that has been staged every five years for over two centuries, featuring more than 400 participants.
