Things to Do and See in Bolzano

The main feature of Bolzano, the capital of the province of the same name, is that it embodies two distinct cultures: the Mediterranean and the Central European, as evident in its architecture, the narrow streets, arches, and small squares of its historic center. Starting with the Cathedral, the city’s iconic landmark. Located on the southwest side of Walther Square, in what is known as Parish Square, it is characterized by Romanesque and Gothic architecture, with its roof tiled in vibrant colors— green-and-gold, and its filigree spire—elegant and ethereal—with its Gothic bell tower featuring an openwork finial, considered the most beautiful in the region. Other notable religious buildings include the Dominican Church and the Franciscan Church. During the Christmas season, Piazza Walther hosts the traditional Christmas Market with its characteristic wooden huts offering decorations, handicrafts, and culinary specialties. Finally, we recommend the South Tyrolean Archaeological Museum, which displays artifacts and documentation on South Tyrolean history from its origins to the early Middle Ages, including the famous “Iceman,” the mummy of “Ötzi,” a mummified body dating back approximately 5,300 years. Elsewhere in the province, we recommend visiting Bressanone, a town of particular artistic significance, with its palaces that blend Gothic, Renaissance, and Rococo elements. Don’t miss the Cathedral with its frescoed cloister, the Palace of the Prince-Bishops—home to the Diocesan Museum, which includes the distinctive Nativity Scene Museum—and the Augustinian Abbey of Novacella, a religious complex of great artistic value located nearby. The province is famous for its numerous castles; among the most interesting to visit is Trauttmansdorff Castle, which—surrounded by its magnificent and colorful gardens—was once the winter residence of Princess Sissi, who loved to visit South Tyrol because of its milder climate. Today it houses the unique Touriseum, the Provincial Museum of Tourism, which traces the history of tourism in South Tyrol. Castel Tirolo (11th–13th centuries) is famous for its decorations and its chapel rich in frescoes, and it houses the Historical and Cultural Museum of the Province of Bolzano; also not to be missed are the Renaissance Velturno Castle and Rodengo Castle, situated in a picturesque location. While in Vipiteno you can admire the Town Hall with its richly decorated interiors, the Torre delle Dodici—the city’s symbol—and the spectacular Stanghe waterfalls in Racines, Merano offers an oasis of relaxation and wellness with its splendid thermal baths. Furthermore, it is a town rich in history and art: its historic center is home to various monuments, including the Princely Castle and the Kurhaus, the magnificent early 20th-century Art Nouveau complex that now serves as a venue for concerts and major events such as the Merano Wine Festival. Finally, in the Puster Valley, Brunico stands out with its imposing castle, which will become part of the Messner Mountain Museum project conceived by the famous mountaineer Reinhold Messner to celebrate the mountains and their relationship with humanity.
