Things to Do and See in Caltanissetta

The province of Caltanissetta offers a rich and varied cultural experience, with museums, castles, and archaeological sites to visit in the heart of Sicily. Starting from the city of Caltanissetta, the capital of the province of the same name and nestled among Sicily’s nature reserves, you can embark on numerous tourist itineraries to discover the history of the various cultures that have left their mark on this land: the Greeks, Arabs, and Bourbons. From a historical and artistic perspective, a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Caltanissetta is highly recommended; it is one of the most important museums on the island of Sicily due to its collection of artifacts of considerable significance. As for civil architecture, there are many historic palaces in the historic center that were once home to prominent local families. Elsewhere in the province, highlights include the 14th-century castle of Mussomeli, where legend tells of three sisters walled up alive inside one of the halls, known as the Hall of the Three Sisters; the castle of Delia, which is exceptionally well-preserved and offers a splendid view; Terranova Castle in Gela, with a square layout and four corner towers; and Castelluccio, built on a hill overlooking the entire surrounding plain. The “museum” tour of the archaeological section begins right in the city of Gela, as the city was one of the largest Greek colonies in Sicily. In fact, excavations at the Acropolis have unearthed two Doric temples, one of which was dedicated to Athena.
