Things to Do and See in Campobasso

Campobasso, the capital of the province of the same name, boasts several major landmarks, including Monforte Castle—built in 1450 on the ruins of a Norman structure—and numerous churches, among them the Cathedral, the Church of San Giorgio, built in the 12th century in the Gothic style; the Church of San Bartolomeo, in the Romanesque style; the Church of St. Anthony the Abbot, with a late-Renaissance façade and a Baroque interior; and the Church of San Leonardo, dating back to the 13th century. Also worth noting is the Nativity Scene Museum, which houses a collection of antique nativity scenes. Elsewhere in the province, there are numerous villages rich in history and archaeology, starting with Larino, a village inhabited since the 5th century B.C., rich in monuments from various eras, including the burial ground, tombs, and the Hellenistic domus; the Roman amphitheater with its nearby thermal baths; the 14th-century Gothic cathedral; the tower adjacent to the cathedral; the Town Hall; and the Church of St. Francis. In the municipality of Sepino, you’ll also find the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Saepinum: the Forum, the Basilica, Porta Bojano, the Baths, the Theater, the Cardo and Decumanus, the city walls, and the majestic city gates. Other interesting archaeological sites include Fagifulae – Santa Maria di Faifoli near Montavano, Bojano, Trivento, and Tufara. Additionally, there are the rustic villas of Morrone del Sannio and San Giacomo degli Schiavoni.
