Things to Do and See in Cosenza

Cosenza is one of the oldest cities in Calabria and is situated on the seven hills in the Crati Valley, at the confluence with the Busento River. The old town is characterized by narrow alleys; the historic center is rich in monumental buildings and stately homes. Notable museums include the Museo dei Brettii, inaugurated in 2009 within the 15th-century monumental complex of St. Augustine, the Museo delle Rimembranze, and the Bilotti Open-Air Museum. Also of great interest are the cultural initiatives of the A. Rendano Traditional Theater, the historic Cinemateatro Italia, and the Teatro Stabile d’Innovazione della Calabria. Elsewhere in the province, we recommend visiting Rocca Imperiale, where the town is dominated by an imposing fortress built by Frederick II; to Rende, a town where the Normans built the castle and city walls; and to Corigliano Calabro, a town of medieval origins dominated by a mighty castle. Finally, in Rossano, you can visit the Giorgio Amarelli Licorice Museum and the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art; while in Praia a Mare, the Municipal Museum features a wealth of beautiful contemporary art exhibitions.
