Things to Do and See in Enna

Due to its central location on the island, Enna—the capital of the province of the same name—is referred to as the “Navel of Sicily” on the one hand; and, thanks to its enchanting views, as the “Belvedere of Sicily” on the other. The city enjoys a panoramic hillside location that allows visitors to appreciate its setting even from the historic center; the highlight is the Castello di Lombardia, the city’s iconic landmark—an imposing fortress that stands at the highest point, making Enna the highest provincial capital in Italy. Thanks to its long history spanning three millennia—during which it served as a nearly impregnable stronghold for the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, and Aragonese—Enna boasts a remarkable architectural heritage. Among its civil architecture, we note Palazzo Varisano, which houses the halls of the Regional Archaeological Museum, displaying valuable archaeological artifacts related to the ancient societies that once thrived in the Enna region, and Palazzo Pollicarini, a fortified building in the Gothic-Catalan style, whose construction dates back to the early 16th century. Also worth noting in the rest of the province are the Villa del Casale, whose ruins are located on the outskirts of Piazza Armerina and are considered the greatest example of Roman mosaic art, and among the most picturesque villages, Aidone, a charming village perched on a hill, where narrow alleys, small stairways, and courtyards define the ancient urban fabric, along with the adjacent Morgantina, one of the most important archaeological sites.
