Things to Do and See in Frosinone

The ideal starting point for visiting the Ciociaria region is its capital, Frosinone. Situated in a scenic location on a hilly, undulating terrain, the city offers views of both its historic center—which overlooks the plain—and its modern district, located further down the slope. The historic center is located in Piazzale Vittorio Veneto, where you can visit the Cathedral, dedicated to St. Mary of the Assumption, which was originally built in the Romanesque style and rebuilt in subsequent eras. As for secular architecture, notable examples include the Pietro Tiravanti Building, one of the city’s most imposing structures, and the Government Palace, seat of the Prefecture, which houses furnishings from the Royal Palace of Caserta; meanwhile, the Provincial Palace is worth a visit for its neoclassical style and houses, in addition to works by Renato Guttuso and Umberto Mastroianni, the famous *Danzatrice*, the Art Nouveau bronze statue by Amleto Cataldi. Elsewhere in the province, we recommend Anagni, with its splendid Romanesque cathedral, the Palazzo dei Papi (Palace of the Popes) of Boniface VIII, featuring a Romanesque cathedral and the ruins of the Roman market and theater; Alatri, surrounded by polygonal walls and featuring the Acropolis atop the hill; Veroli, with the Abbey of Casamari nestled in a picturesque setting; and Fiuggi, one of Europe’s most important spa resorts. Finally, we recommend a visit to one of Christianity’s most famous monasteries, the Abbey of Montecassino, founded in the 6th century by St. Benedict.
