Sondrio, the provincial capital, is located at the mouth of the Valmalenco, which divides the Bernina Alps and the mountains of the Val Bregaglia into two parts. The heart of the city is Piazza Garibaldi, surrounded by elegant neoclassical buildings and the Pedretti cinema-theater, built in 1820. Notable examples of civil architecture include the historic buildings in the oldest part of the city: Renaissance-style structures such as Palazzo Carbonera, the gate on Via Beccaria, and Masegra Castle—now home to the Masegra Castle Historical Museum—as well as the Town Hall; Baroque-style buildings such as Palazzo Sassi, Palazzo Seroli—which houses the Valtellina Museum of History and Art—and Casa Bosatta; and the neoclassical structures, notably the Collegiate Church of Saints Gervasio and Protasio, dating back to the 12th century: it is recognizable by its tall bell tower, the city’s symbol.
