Terni, the capital of the province of the same name, is known as the city of lovers because it is home to the relics of Saint Valentine, the local patron saint, after whom the basilica is named. Among the other religious buildings worth visiting is the Gothic-style Church of St. Francis, which dates back to the 13th century but was completely rebuilt; inside, it features a cycle of frescoes by Bartolomeo di Tommaso of the Giotto school. In Piazza Europa, near the central Piazza della Repubblica, stands the imposing Palazzo Spada, which once belonged to the Spada family and is now the City Hall. Meanwhile, in Piazza Duomo, you can see the remains of the Fausto Amphitheater, an oval-shaped arena believed to date back to A.D. 32 and commissioned by Fausto Tizio Liberale, capable of holding over 10,000 spectators. Elsewhere in the province, we recommend admiring the cliff of Orvieto, dominated by the Duomo—the iconic symbol of this region, known and appreciated throughout the world. Scattered throughout the area are archaeological ruins such as the site of Carsulae, an ancient Roman town traversed by the ancient Via Flaminia, which features numerous monuments, including the Arch of St. Damian; and also the town of Amelia, with its ancient origins, and the historic village of Narni, which became a Latin colony in 299 B.C. and later a municipality under the name Narnia, where visitors should see its towers, fountains, and Gothic and Romanesque churches.
