The city of Trapani is not only the provincial capital but also the most developed and important urban center. Its historic center is centered around the harbor and features numerous ancient palaces and religious buildings, such as the Basilica of Maria Santissima Annunziata, the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, the Church of Purgatorio, and the Church of San Pietro with its splendid and imposing organ dating from 1842. There are also numerous fortifications built over time to defend the city, such as the 17th-century Ligny Tower—which now houses the Museum of Prehistory—the Colombaia Castle, the Terra Castle dating back to the Carthaginian era, and the 16th-century Bastion of the Impossible. Behind Trapani, atop a hill, lies the medieval town of Erice, dominated by the Cathedral of the Assumption. In the municipality of Calatafimi lies the archaeological complex of Segesta, featuring its Doric-style temple and Greek theater. Another archaeological site of primary importance is Selinunte, located on the southern coast between the towns of Sciacca and Mazara del Vallo; there, visitors can explore the necropolis and the ruins of the Acropolis. Another coastal town and important port is Marsala, whose main monuments include the 11th-century castle, the Cathedral, and the Church of Purgatory. Near the city lies the ancient Phoenician city of Mozia (Mothia), situated on the island of San Pantaleo. The island is a veritable open-air museum with an incredible wealth of archaeological finds.
