The city of Vercelli is the provincial capital and its largest city. Among its main landmarks are the Basilica of Sant’Andrea with its four towers, the neoclassical Cathedral of Sant’Eusebio, the Church of San Cristoforo, and the Church of San Bernardo.
There are numerous civic towers scattered throughout the city, such as the Torre dell’Angelo, the Torre Comunale, the Torre dei Vialardi, and the Torre Avogadro, in addition to the 13th-century Visconti Castle. Of particular note is the Borgogna Museum, whose collection of paintings makes it one of the largest art galleries in Piedmont.

Other towns in the province include Gattinara, surrounded by vineyards that produce the wine of the same name; Arborio, located in the heart of the rice-growing region; Santhià; and Crescentino. The town of Varallo is home to the Sacro Monte, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, consisting of a basilica and forty-five frescoed chapels housing over eight hundred life-size terracotta statues.
Among the most interesting castles are Buronzo Castle, San Genuario Castle, Moncrivello Castle, and Rovasenda Castle. Heading further into the mountains, you’ll reach Alagna Valsesia, a major winter tourist destination. With its extensive network of sports facilities, it offers opportunities to enjoy every type of skiing, especially freeriding (off-piste skiing), for which Alagna is considered the capital.
Finally, for those who love hiking in the mountains, the Alta Valsesia Natural Park offers numerous trails that are also suitable for mountain biking. Staying in the lowlands, similar opportunities are available at the Lame del Sesia Regional Natural Park.
