The provincial capital, Sondrio is located at the mouth of the Valmalenco, that bisects the Bernina Alps and the mountains of the Bergell. The heart of the city is represented by Piazza Garibaldi, surrounded by elegant neoclassical buildings and the theater-cinema Pedretti, built in 1820. Among the civil architecture there is the palace Carbonera, port via Beccaria, Masegra Castle, now home of the Historical Museum Castle Masegra, and the Town Hall. Without forgetting, Seroli Palace, inside of which you can visit the Valtellina Museum of History and Art, and the House Bosatta. In the rest of the province, in the territory of the Valtellina you can visit the towers and castles located in suggestive positions and of great strategic importance as the tower called “de li beli miri” of Teglio and Castel Grumello. While for the shrines, they recommend the Blessed Virgin of Tirano and the Madonna della Sassella, located on a spur of rock in the vineyards on the outskirts of Sondrio. Very known are the ski resorts in the “Skiarea Valtellina”, made up of four major ski areas: Alta Valtellina, Aprica, Valmalenco and Valchiavenna. With over 400 km of slopes for downhill skiing and 200 km for Nordic skiing some of the towns such as Livigno, Bormio, Santa Caterina, Valdidentro / Valdisotto, Aprica, Chiesa in Valmalenco and Caspoggio are famous internationally.
