Crotone’s culinary tradition is characterized by simple products with strong, authentic flavors, such as Crotonese pecorino cheese and Cutro bread—which is also exported to many regions of northern Italy—made with durum wheat flour. Notable traditional dishes include soppressata, the typical local cured meat; sardella, known as the “caviar of the South” or “the poor man’s caviar”; pipi e patati (peppers and potatoes), made with peppers and potatoes sautéed in a pan with garlic and olive oil; and “U Cuadaru,” a delicious and very spicy fish soup. The region also boasts excellent and significant wine production, with Cirò DOC standing out above all others; this red wine represents one of the region’s finest products.
