What to Eat and Drink in Isernia

The culinary tradition of this province is characterized by simple, authentic dishes with rural origins. In addition, the region is rich in prized black and white truffles. The cured meats, such as sausages and sopressata, are excellent, and among the cheeses, caciocavallo, mozzarella, scamorza, stracciata, burrino, and pecorino stand out. Typical dishes include crjoli, pasta alla chitarra, cavatelli, potato and flour gnocchetti with tomato and pork, and laganelle with beans. As for main courses, be sure to try roasted turcinelli, made with lamb offal. For those with a sweet tooth, traditional desserts include calzoni filled with cocoa, chickpeas, cinnamon, pine nuts, and honey; pepatelli, made with almonds; and caggiunitti, doughnuts filled with chestnuts. The wines are excellent, including Biferno (white, red, and rosé) and Pentro (white, red, and rosé); while typical liqueurs include poncio, flavored with orange and mandarin, and limoncello.
