Piacenza, capital of the province, is a city rich in art treasures of different historical periods. Starting from Piazza dei Cavalli, where there is the Town Hall and Cathedral Square, where to stand out is the Romanesque Cathedral. Among the religious architecture you can admire the Church of San Sisto and the Church of St. Anthony; while, among the civil buildings the neoclassical Teatro Municipal devoted to Verdi and the imposing Palazzo Farnese, built in the second half of the sixteenth century and today the seat of the Civic Museums. Not to be missed is the Gallery of Modern Art Ricci Oddi, which provides a comprehensive overview of Italian figurative since the second half of the nineteenth century. Elsewhere in the province, the valleys are the backdrop to medieval villages very interesting and rich in history and art. To start from Val Trebbia where there is Bobbio, born around the Abbey of San Colombano and known for the suggestive Ponte Gobbo. Also worth visiting are the Basilica of San Colombano, the cathedral and the castle. Grazzano Visconti was made entirely in the nineteenth century in neo-Gothic style. Finally, in the Val d’Arda, Castell’Arquato has a rich historical center, while in Sant’Agata of Villanova on Arda, not to be missed is Villa Verdi, the house that hosted the great Giuseppe Verdi.
