What to do and see in Florence

Art cities, Florence is fascinating, starting from its historical center where you can admire countless works of art, colored marble of the churches and buildings that evoke the splendor of past; Piazza del Duomo houses the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, rich in works of art and surmounted by the famous Brunelleschi’s Dome, the Baptistery of San Giovanni, example of Florentine Romanesque and Giotto’s bell tower, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture in Florence. Always near the Piazza del Duomo there is the Loggia del Bigallo; while, behind the cathedral you can admire the Museum of the Opera of Santa Maria del Fiore, where there is a rich collection of works deriving from the Cathedral, the Baptistery and the Campanile. Continuing along the Piazza della Signoria you can meet the Loggia of the Lanzi, the Neptune Fountain and the Palazzo della Signoria or Palazzo Vecchio, one of the symbolic monuments of the city. In front you can admire some statues, including a copy of Michelangelo’s David, while the original is exhibited at the Galleria dell’Accademia. The absolute star of the square remains the famous Uffizi Gallery, one of the most important and famous museums in the world that includes important works such as the Birth of Venus, Primavera of Botticelli, the Adoration of the Magi by Leonardo, the Doni Tondo of Michelangelo, the Madonna of the Goldfinch by Raphael and the Madonna with Long Neck by Parmigianino. Of particular importance it is also the Vasari Corridor, designed by Vasari in the mid sixteenth century that connects it with the Palazzo Vecchio and Palazzo Pitti. Across the famous Ponte Vecchio, the oldest bridge over the Arno with historical goldsmith shops, you can arrive in the district of Oltrarno where there are other important buildings such as the Church of Santa Felicita. While, in Piazza Santo Spirito you can admire the sixteenth century Palazzo Guadagni and the Basilica of the Holy Spirit. Finally, you can not miss a visit to the spectacular square dominated by Palazzo Pitti, the imposing and sumptuous palace that was the residence of the Medici’s family with its beautiful park of the Palace, the Boboli Gardens, which stretches along the homonymous hill. Near Florence you can visit the Charterhouse, also known as Certosa di Firenze, a historical architectural complex perched on a mountain. The town of Fiesole, situated on a hill, it offers the opportunity to admire a beautiful landscape of Etruscan and Roman ruins. Continuing the theme, you can visit Sesto Fiorentino where it was found the Etruscan tomb “Montagnola”, monument of great value. The area of Mugello, a historic region of Tuscany, offers numerous places to visit starting from the parish church of Sant’Agata in Scarperia, the Castle of Trebbio and Villa Medicean of Cafaggiolo Lorenzo the Magnificent’s favorite place for hunting. While in the nearby village of Barberino di Mugello you can admire the impressive Cattani Castle and Praetorian Palace. Other interesting tourist sites are Empoli with the Collegiate Church of St. Andrew and Certaldo, the birthplace of the writer Giovanni Boccaccio, which houses the fourteenth-century Praetorian Palace and the House of Boccaccio with a specialized library on the most important work, the Decameron; other towns that have seen the birth of famous artists in the world are: Vinci, birthplace of Leonardo; Incisa Valdarno, where you can visit the House of Petrarch and Vicchio, the seat of the House of Giotto, turned into a museum.
