Nestled between the pond of St. Just to the south and the Cabras to the north, the city of Oristano, capital of the province, is rich in historical monuments, some of which date back to 1000 years ago in the Middle Ages. Clearly visible traces of this period are found in the Tower of Mariano and the elliptical structure of the city that is developed around Piazza Eleonora D’Arborea, where you can admire the marble monument dedicated to her. In addition, merit special attention the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta dating from 1200 and the Church of St. Francis of neoclassical style with inside a wooden sculpture of the crucified Christ of 1400. Also noteworthy is the Antiquarium Museum Arborense, one of the most important museums of Sardinia where are contained archaeological finds of Roman and Punic from the excavations of Tharros and Comus. Not far from Oristano we find the small town of St. Just, where not only can you admire the ancient Phoenician and Roman remains, but also a medieval jewel among the most beautiful of Sardinia, the Cathedral of St. Just in Romanesque style the twelfth century; the little town of San Salvatore provides a beautiful beach of Is Autas, formed mostly by small grains of quartz. Among the villages you can see also the city of Fordongianus, rich historical artifacts and prehistoric especially those of Roman times as the remains of the amphitheater, a bridge and the famous spa; in Ghilarza there are the most important prehistoric monuments on the island, which is the Nuraghe Losa and the Nuragic Sanctuary of Santa Cristina. Among the archaeological sites of particular interest there is also Tharros, an open air museum full of artifacts relating to population Phoenician including the Thopet, a sanctuary typical of this people and the baths placed in the foundations of the temple.
