Udine is a very elegant city, rich in history and art. Characterized by squares and picturesque canals, the historic center includes palaces in Venetian Gothic style, such as the Palazzo Comunale or Loggia del Lionello. Many are the testimonies of one of the greatest artists of the Italian peninsula, Giambattista Tiepolo, author of the extraordinary frescoes that adorn the Cathedral, the Archbishop’s Palace and the Oratory of Purity. You can also admire the city from the hill on which stands the old castle, the seat of the Civic Museums which include different sections such as the Archaeological Museum, the Gallery of drawings and prints, the Museum of Photography, the Photo Library and Art Gallery old with precious paintings of the XVI-XIX. In the rest of the province south it stretches a wide plain where between mills and small churches are scattered picturesque villages of historical importance as Palmanova, the fortress town; Passariano, where is Villa Manin, residence of the last Doge of Venice; Clauiano and Aiello, the village of sundials and Aquileia with its extraordinary Roman and Christian history. To the north, we point the Friuli hills with its beautiful castles and the town of San Daniele, that home to the unique ham; the eastern hills of Friuli, are characterized by castles (Attimis and Faedis), Art Nouveau villas (Tarcento), and the industrial district of the chair (Manzano). Cividale del Friuli, full of a remarkable artistic heritage including the famous Lombard temple, is an example of early medieval architecture and decorated with frescoes and stucco, as well as the Duomo, Devil’s Bridge and the National Archaeological Museum which displays a rich collection of objects and artifacts from Roman times to the Middle Ages. There are numerous ancient castles to visit as the castle Valentinis in Tricesimo, Castle of Cassacco or even that of Colloredo di Monte Albano; while among the places of faith stands the ancient shrine of Our Lady of Castelmonte, located in scenic location between the Julian Alps and the destination of many pilgrimages. Along the coast is the Lignano Sabbiadoro the city to see for beaches.
