There are many places to visit in the capital of the province, Varese. The urban structure of the city is characterized by historic “castellanze”, extra- urban settlements , once autonomous town, today are the center of the city, like Corso Matteotti and Square Monte Grappa, Square San Vittore and Square Baptistery. Known as the “Garden City”, the capital is also characterized by the presence of numerous parks and green areas that are the peculiarity of beautiful villas like Villa Menafoglio Litta Panza of Biume, which houses a collection of contemporary art, African and pre-Columbian; Villa Ponti, with a pond of spring water; Villa Recalcati, where the garden was home to the famous composer Giuseppe Verdi and the poet Giuseppe Parini; Finally, Villa Mirabello, now the Civic Museum. Among the religious architecture we report the Basilica of San Vittore with its famous bell tower and the Baptistery of San Giovanni; while not to be missed among the civil buildings are Estense Palace, in Baroque style, considered a sort of Versailles, and the Castle Castiglioni Mantegazza in Masnago, where there are frescoes dating back to 1400, and the Tower veiled, in the southern part of the city. Lake Maggiore is full of places to visit such as Stresa, the Queen of Lake Maggiore, situated in a panoramic position with several villas, parks and gardens; among Isole Borromee you can admire the Isola Bella with the Borromeo Palace, Isola Madre with the unique vegetation and Isola dei Pescatori. Also more villas are to be admired starting from Villa Cicogna Mozzoni in Bisuschio and Villa della Porta Bozzolo Casalzuigno; among the castles there are Rocca Borromeo in Angera and the Visconti Castle of San Vito in Somma Lombardo.
