Assisi, the Basilica of St. Francis and Other Franciscan Sites

Asís

Assisi, a small medieval town and birthplace of St. Francis, the founder of the religious order of the Franciscans, is a rare example of historic temple town represented within the its landscape and its territory. In 2000 it was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site because the majestic Basilica of St. Francis contains a treasure of masterpieces of human creative genius and is an outstanding example of architecture that influenced the development of art. Besides being the city symbol of the messages of peace promoted by St. Francis and St. Clare, Assisi is a very warm and hospitable place with a territory rich in natural attractions, historical and gastronomic. Skilful craftsmen masons and sculptors gave the city an incomparable appearance but its notoriety is due to the figure of St. Francis, the saint who spoke to animals. The Basilica dedicated to him is composed of two churches (the lower and the upper) as well as a crypt dug in 1818 which preserves the saint’s tomb that consists of a simple coffin resting on the rock. Inside the Basilica you can admire the frescoes of Giotto, Cimabue, Lorenzetti and the greatest artists of the two hundred and three hundred that made this place a must for all those, believers or not, still feel today the Franciscan message.
