The Aeolian Islands

Las Islas Eolias

The Aeolian Islands are located off the northern coast of Sicily. The group is made up of seven islands: Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Stromboli, Filicudi, Alicudi and Panarea and five small islands: Basiluzzo, Dattilo, Lisca Nera, Bottaro and Lisca Bianca near Panarea. The islands are characterized by a wild and untouched nature, as well as two active volcanoes, Stromboli and Vulcano. The largest island is Lipari and its common collects all islands except that of Salina. Here not to be missed are the Archaeological Museum, located in the Castle of Lipari, the Greek Acropolis and the Norman Cathedral. Instead the smallest is Panarea although it is the oldest of all. On the island of Vulcano can be observed volcanic phenomena such as fumaroles, jets of steam both on the crest that submarine, and sulphurous mud. Stromboli is famous for one of the most active volcanoes in Europe with spectacular and frequent eruptions; with a little luck you can watch the “Sciara del Fuoco”: the lava flow down to the sea. The second largest island is Salina which houses a beautiful forest of ferns, known as the “Fossa delle Felci”, overlooking stunning beaches such as Pollara. Finally Alicudi and Filicudi; in the first you can see the Cliff of La Canna (high about 85 metres), the “Scoglio della Fortuna” and the spectacular “Grotta del Bue” (cavern). In the second you can discover incredible Mediterranean landscapes, such as the “Scoglio della Galera”.
