Turin is a city that combines the old and the new, a city that is the story not only of Piedmont but of Italy. Ancient Roman settlement (Augusta Taurinorum) of its history remains important ruins, represented by the Porte Palatine, one of the original inputs of the ancient Roman city. The story goes on till to become the capital of the Kingdom of Savoy and later in 1861 the first capital of Italy. These two thousand years of history have left many monuments, the first of which is used as a symbol of the city is the Mole Antonelliana, now home to the National Museum of Cinema. Another pride of the city is the Egyptian Museum, the second largest in the world after Cairo, where you can find incredible testimonies of the ancient Egyptian civilization. The city center is represented by Piazza Castello, which is surrounded by the Royal Palace, the Royal Library, the Royal Armoury, Palazzo Madama (located at the center of the square), the Church of San Lorenzo and the Teatro Regio, home to one of the main Italian lyric opera companies. Other royal palaces that you can visit are: Palazzo Carignano, now the Museum of the Renaissance and former seat of the first Parliament of Italy; Villa della Regina, residence of the Queen and finally theValentino Castle located in the park of which is the largest public park in the city. Other places of artistic and cultural city of his belt are: the Cathedral, where is kept the Holy Shroud, theGallery Subalpina, Piazza Vittorio Veneto, Piazza San Carlo, Piazza Carlo Felice and Piazza Statuto.On the outskirts you can find the Castle of Rivoli, home to the Museum of Modern Art, the Castle of Moncalieri, the Hunting Residence of Stupinigi, the Palazzo Ducale of Agliè, the Castle of Mandriaand the Royal Residence of Venaria, one of the most visited in Italy. Taking the Susa Valley you can meets the Sacra di San Michele, which on top of a rocky outcrop overlooking the entire valley, the religious complex of St. Anthony of Ranverso and the Abbey of Novalesa. At the bottom of the valley you arrive to Sestriere with its ski area of the Via Lattea where took place the competitions of the Olympic Games in Turin in 2006, where you can practice any kind of winter sport. Also in Susa Valley you can visit Exilles Fort, an imposing military construction that allows to control the whole valley; in the parallel valley, the Chisone Valley, however, we can find the Fenestrelle Fort an incredible example of military architecture of enormous size and length of over three kilometers on a mountain side. Among the special features of the province mention the Carnival of Ivrea with its famous Battle of the Oranges and events like the Book Fair and the Salone del Gusto who achieved international dimensions.
