The city of Vercelli is the capital of the province and is its largest town. Among the major monuments we can find the Basilica of St. Andrew with its four towers, the Cathedral of St. Eusebius in neoclassical style, the Church of St. Christopher and the Church of St. Bernard.There are numerous Civic Towers around the city such as the Tower of the Angel, the Municipal Tower, the Tower of Vialardi and the Tower Avogadro in addition to the Visconti Castle of the thirteenth century. It should be noted that the Museum Burgundy is among the largest collections of paintings that allow it to be one of the largest art galleries in the Piedmont. Other towns in the province are: Gattinara surrounded by its vineyards; Arborio located at the center of the area of paddy fields; Santhià and Crescentino. The city of Varallo houses the Sacro Monte of Varallo, UNESCO World Heritage Site, that consists of a basilica and forty-five frescoed chapels populated by over eight hundred statues of life-size terracotta. Among the most interesting castles are: the Castle of Buronzo, the Castle of San Genuario, the Castle of Moncrivello and the Castle of Rovasenda. Advancing towards the mountains you arrive at the resort of Alagna, home of the major tourist center with a remarkable development of winter sports facilities that allow all kinds of activities, but especially the freeride skiing (off-piste skiing), which Alagna is the capital. Finally, for those who love walking in the mountains, the Natural Park Alta Valsesia offers multiple paths that can also be used by mountain bike. Staying on the plains similar possibilities are offered by the Regional Natural Park Lame del Sesia.
