The city of Aosta has its origins in the period of the ancient Roman Empire. Of this period we can admire the Arch of Augustus, the Porta Pretoria and the ancient city wall and the Roman amphitheater that is still used as a venue for concerts and shows. These memories of the ancient Roman civilization are flanked by medieval monuments, especially religious, such as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the complex of Sant’Orso. In town, at the end of January, there is the Sant’Orso Fair which is the most important event in the area that attracts many tourists and curious and where you can find a comprehensive selection of local handicrafts and delicacies of the region. In the stretch of valley between Pont Saint Martin (first town you meet arriving from Piedmont) and Courmayeur we can admire the many castles that over the centuries have been home of various feudal lords who ruled the territory. Among them we highlight the Castle of Bard, the Castke of Fenis, the Castle of Issogne, the Castle of Verres, the Castle of Sarre and the Castle of Saint-Pierre. To these are added a number of others, in fact a whole in the region are over eighty. The region, which have only alpine features, in winter is the winter sports paradise, in fact it has about thirty ski resorts, among which the area of ​​Monte Rosa with the town of Gressoney, the area of ​​the Matterhorn with the town of Breuil-Cervinia where on the glaciers skiing is possible in summer, the Mont Blanc with the resorts of Courmayeur and the Gran Paradiso, with the resorts of Cogne and Pila. In all ski resorts you can practice all winter sports, from skiing to snowboarding, cross-country skiing to walking off the track with snowshoes. In summer across the region offers trails and hiking trails that allow contact with nature to discover the fantastic landscapes such as that offered by the Blue Lake at the foot of the Matterhorn. The region offers also the possibility of relaxing to spa lovers, in fact, in Saint-Vincent there are many spas. Also the same town of Saint Vincent is home to the casino (one of the four that exist in Italy).
