What to do and see in Siena

Siena is a city of art with characteristic alleys, towers, craft shops and buildings. The city hosts the famous Palio, a historical horse race between the districts which every year in July takes place in Piazza del Cam-po, one of the largest medieval squares. Around the square there is the Public Palace, a jewel of Gothic art and the Civic Museum, Chapel Square, surmounted by the Torre del Mangia and the Fonte Gaia by Jacopo della Quercia, the most important public fountain in the city from 1346. Other sites that you can admire are the Duomo, one of the highest architectures of Romanesque-Gothic art, full of sculptures and paintings, the Museum of Metropolitan with inside works by famous artists in-cluding Duccio, Ambrogio Lorenzetti, Taddeo di Bartolo, the Medici Fortress in red bricks, commissioned by Cosimo I, the Lodge of the Merchandise, in Gothic-Renaissance style. Among the religious buildings we remember also the Sanctuary House of Saint Catherine, the patron saint of Italy and Europe, with chapels richly decorated by different artists. Along the Via Francigena, many are the medieval testimonies to be admired, starting from abbeys like An-timo, Romanesque churches and picturesque villages such as San Quirico d’Orcia or San Gimignano. Other medieval center is Asciano, dominated by the typical “Crete”, clayey soils where erosion has created cracks, grooves and slits: a scenic area in which stands the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore. In Val di Merse there are lonely places, but fascinating as the ruins of the Abbey of San Galgano, dating back to centuries XIII. While, in the Orcia Valley you can visit magnificent towns including San Quirico, Montalcino (renowned for the prized wine “Brunello di Montalcino”), Castiglione and Pienza, another UNESCO site for the richness of its monuments. Finally, also in Val di Chiana stand other delightful towns such as Montepulciano, typical medieval city, Chianciano Terme, known for its famous waters since Etru-scan times, and seat of the Archaeological Museum of Waters and Chiusi, with a national archaeological museum very important.
